MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern
Art) hosts QSL an artist’s project by Kelly Large.
As part of the pre-opening program MIMA will set up a temporary FM
radio station that aims to relocate existing artist’s work and
contemporary arts practice out of the gallery onto local air waves.
QSL will use the medium of radio to explore ideas and experiences of
transmission and reception. Artists, curators, cultural theorists and
local communities will be invited to respond to a play-list selected
by Kelly Large from MIMA’s collection of artists’ sound
works. The play list will record the personal activity of audition and
function as the starting point for new work. Participants will be asked
to use the resulting sequence of existing audio art ‘as a generator
of activities’ (Nicolas Bourriaud 2002) from which to produce
new contributions for broadcast.
